JEE Main is a national-level entrance examination for admission to leading engineering institutions such as National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). The examination also serves as the qualifying test for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern
The JEE Main 2026 examination will be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode at various designated test centres across India. The exam is organised into two papers Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech aspirants and Paper 2 for candidates seeking admission to B.Arch and B.Planning programs. Each paper will be held for a duration of three hours.
For Paper 1, the question paper covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject carries 25 questions, resulting in a total of 75 questions with a maximum of 300 marks. The paper includes a combination of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical answer-type questions designed to assess conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability.
As per the marking scheme, 4 marks are awarded for every correct response, while one mark is deducted for each incorrect answer in MCQs. No marks are awarded or deducted for questions left unanswered.
Meanwhile, Paper 2 is structured for students applying to B.Arch and B.Planning courses. This paper contains sections such as Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing or Planning-based questions, depending on the course chosen and evaluates candidates on both analytical and design-related skills.
