The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has announced two new postgraduate programmes for the academic session 2026-27. The institute will start an MTech in Maritime Engineering and a Master of Design (MDes). These new courses have been introduced to meet the changing needs of industries and to give students better career opportunities in modern fields.
The institute said that both programs have been designed in a way that students can gain practical knowledge along with classroom learning. The courses will also help students develop skills that are useful in today’s job market.
MDes programme to focus on design and innovation
The new MDes programs has been started for students who are interested in design, creativity, and problem solving. This course will combine different subjects such as technology, design, engineering, and social sciences.
The main aim of this programs is to teach students how to solve real life problems with new ideas and better designs. Students will learn how to make products more useful, how to improve user experience, and how to create innovative solutions for different industries.
The course will not be limited to theory only. Students will work on projects, group activities, and practical assignments. They will also learn how to work in teams and understand the needs of people before designing any product or service.
According to the institute, the MDes programs will prepare students for jobs in many areas such as product design, digital design, user experience, innovation strategy, and research. Today, many companies are looking for people who can combine creative thinking with technical knowledge. This course has been designed keeping that demand in mind.
MTech in Maritime Engineering
Along with the MDes programs, the institute has also launched an MTech in Maritime Engineering. This course is meant for students who want to work in the shipping, port, and ocean related sectors.
The programs will cover topics such as port infrastructure, ocean engineering, shipping systems, transport through waterways, and maritime rules and regulations. Students will also study how goods are transported through ports and how large ports are managed.
This course is important because India is now giving more attention to the development of ports and sea transport. Many new projects are being started to improve trade through waterways. Because of this, there is a growing need for trained people in the maritime sector.
The institute said that Gujarat is one of the leading states in port activities and sea trade. Therefore, students who study this course may get good job opportunities in Gujarat and other coastal areas of India.
Focus on practical learning and careers
The institute has said that both programmes will focus strongly on practical learning. Students will get opportunities to take part in projects, internships, research work, and industry visits. This will help them understand how work is done in the real world.
The courses are also expected to include interaction with experts from industries and research organisations. This can help students learn directly from professionals and improve their chances of getting good jobs after completing the programme.
New step towards future ready education
With the launch of these two programmes, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar is trying to provide education that is useful for the future. The institute wants students to learn modern skills and become ready for changing industries.
These programs are expected to attract students who want careers in technology, design, engineering, and innovation. Through these new courses, the institute hopes to prepare students for future challenges and create more job opportunities for them.
