In a major step towards strengthening advanced skill development in the Northeast, the Directorate of Skill Development, Government of Tripura, on Monday launched IIT Delhi-led Advanced IT and Emerging Technology Skill Development Programs under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0.
The program is being implemented in collaboration with the Industry Hub for Financing of Advanced Research (IHFC) and the Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) of IIT Delhi. The launch event was held at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala and aims to prepare the youth of Tripura for future job markets by offering training in new and high-demand technologies.
One of the major highlights of the event was the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with leading global technology companies IBM and HCL. These partnerships are expected to provide students with industry-focused training, live projects, internship opportunities and better placement support.
Speaking to ANI, IT Secretary to the Government of Tripura, Kiran Gitte, said the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between education and industry needs. He added that the involvement of industry leaders will help students gain real world exposure and improve their employment prospects at both national and global levels.
Under PMKVY 4.0, IIT Delhi will offer specialised training in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Blockchain, 5G technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). The program will focus on classroom based learning along with hands on lab sessions, conducted by IIT Delhi faculty and industry experts.
In the first phase, around 300 engineering graduates will be trained through collaborations with reputed institutions including NIT Agartala, NIELIT Agartala, MSME Tool Room Agartala and Tripura University.
Inaugurating the program, IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee praised the efforts of the Government of Tripura and said such initiatives would help students from the state become both job-ready and future ready. He also told ANI that the programme supports the vision of “Skill Tripura, Skilled India” and has the potential to position Tripura as a growing hub for advanced technology talent in the Northeast.
Why This Program Matters for Tripura
- The Northeast has limited access to advanced technology training, forcing many students to look outside the region for quality skill development. This program brings high-end technical education, led by IIT Delhi, directly to Tripura.
- Due to the lack of specialised IT and emerging technology courses, a large number of young professionals migrate to metro cities for better learning and job opportunities. By offering industry-relevant training within the state, the initiative is expected to reduce youth migration.
- Skill development in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and 5G will help create a job-ready workforce, making local talent more attractive to national and global employers.
- A skilled workforce can attract technology companies and investments to the state, contributing to economic growth and creating more employment opportunities in Tripura.
- The program supports the state government’s vision of strengthening the local economy through education, innovation and employment, positioning Tripura as an emerging skill hub in the Northeast.
